Tulsa Zoo continues progress on new seven-acre African Wilds expansion

Work continues on the Tulsa Zoo's seven-acre African Wilds expansion, which will house lions, zebras, and other species before opening in fall 2025.

Work moves ahead on a seven-acre project at the Tulsa Zoo. The upgrade will bring several new species and larger habitats to the city facility.

The layout features diverse wildlife. These animals will reside in the space:

  • Lions
  • Painted dogs
  • Meerkats
  • Zebras
  • Pygmy hippos
  • Reptiles
  • Birds

Staff members welcomed a tour group on Wednesday to view the layout. Joe Barkowski serves as Vice President of Animal Conservation. Barkowski spoke about the ongoing construction across the Tulsa grounds.

“We are very, very thankful people are patient. We know there’s a lot of construction going on; they see the construction.”

He expressed hope that visitors share excitement about the upcoming changes. Barkowski promised additional updates during the new year.

The facility cares for wildlife and educates the regional public about nature. Major upgrades help facilities modernise animal care areas over time.

The finished habitat should open by fall of next year. The city institution reaches its 100-year milestone in 2027.
