Drake Hirst takes first place at International Lineman’s Rodeo in Bonner Springs
Oklahoma utility worker Drake Hirst won the Apprentice Pole Climb at the International Lineman's Rodeo, topping global peers in Bonner Springs.
Drake Hirst won the Apprentice Police Climb at a global utility competition in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The victory marked a top finish for an Oklahoma utility crew member against international peers. OG&E announced the contest results following the event.
The Apprentice Police Climb challenges competitors to scale a utility pole quickly. Linemen carry eggs in a basket and in their mouths during the climb, according to OG&E. The task tests speed, coordination and control under pressure.
The company said other events featured the Hurtman Rescue. That exercise gives workers a chance to demonstrate skills needed for field emergencies. Line workers also displayed teamwork required for actual work situations.
The gathering takes place at the Overland Park Convention Center in Bonner Springs. The event brings together line workers for professional development and industry collaboration, OG&E said. Twelve teams competed when the contest first began in 1948.
More than 300 teams now attend the annual competition. Over 450 apprentices from across the globe also participate. The event has grown steadily since its launch.
The International Lineman’s Rodeo serves as a skills assembly for electric utility personnel. Crews practice everyday safety procedures and emergency rescue techniques during scheduled tests. Companies use the matches to build field readiness.
OG&E said the competition spotlights specialized knowledge used by its crews every day. Workers use those skills to provide electricity to customers. The utility serves communities across Oklahoma and Arkansas.
