Jesse Lane Mitchell sentenced in Collinsville child sexual abuse case

Jesse Lane Mitchell received a federal prison term for a Collinsville child abuse case, officials announced. He must serve three decades behind bars for coercion and enticement of a minor. The court also ordered 10 years of supervised release.

Mitchell, 36, admitted to persuading a child between the ages of 10 and 12 to engage in sexually explicit activity. The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed the sentence. The court said Mitchell must register as a sex offender upon release.

In Aug. 2024, Collinsville Police Department officers responded to a report involving a child. The minor had marks on their neck caused by an adult male. Law enforcement said Mitchell had fled the home before officers arrived.

He was the sole adult present. The mother was jailed on unrelated charges at the time. Investigators later reviewed social media messages and found alarming communication between Mitchell and the victim.

Law enforcement discovered the mother knew about the abuse. She still let Mitchell stay in the home and interact with her children. Court records show she pleaded guilty to child neglect.

The mother received 17 years and six months in prison. She also faces five years of supervised release. She admitted that she failed to protect her children.

“These sentences reflect the serious harm these defendants inflicted on vulnerable children and the grave breach of trust involved,” stated United States Attorney Christopher J. Nassar. “Our office will continue to pursue those who exploit children and those who knowingly allow that exploitation, and we remain grateful to our law enforcement partners for their diligent work in bringing these offenders to justice.”

Federal supervised release places specific behavioral conditions on defendants following their release from incarceration. Both individuals will serve their terms within the U.S. Bureau of Prisons system.

Authorities confirmed both defendants will be transferred to federal custody. Collinsville police worked with federal prosecutors on the joint investigation.
