Robin Daniels serves as program manager for the Tulsa Health Department Healthy Start program. Daniels said the gathering delivers essential services directly to families in North Tulsa.
“We do have limited resources in this community,” Daniels said.
Transportation can create a major obstacle for residents trying to access care. Daniels said the Healthy Start program offers transportation to clients to reach needed support.
Daniels said North Tulsa experiences a higher infant mortality rate than South Tulsa. She noted the same disparity appears when comparing the area to other communities.
“We need the resources obviously, we need more focus and awareness on this community,” Daniels said.
Tulsa resident Tamara Grundy attended the gathering alongside her younger sister. Her sister is expecting twins.
Grundy said the economy creates challenges for many local households. She said community members need assistance right now.
“In our North Tulsa community I feel that a lot of people need help because of the economy right now. This is a good way to bring everybody together to help them with what they need.”
Grundy said local programs exist that many area residents may not recognize. She said organizations must advertise more so people discover available services.
Grundy said her family maintains a strong personal network. She still urged new parents to gather every available resource in case life circumstances change.
The Tulsa Health Department Healthy Start program provides care coordination and family outreach. The initiative connects pregnant individuals and new caregivers with medical and social services.
The annual gathering helps families prepare for newborn arrivals across North Tulsa. Organizers intend for parents to maintain ties with participating service providers after the day ends.
