Tulsa Public Schools to launch Oklahoma’s first polytechnic high school

Tulsa Public Schools will launch Oklahoma's first polytechnic high school program at Central High School to expand local career and technical training.

Tulsa Public Schools will open the state’s first polytechnic secondary program at Central High School. The expanded Tulsa Tech partnership aims to improve local career training pathways.

The district announced the venture on Monday. Leaders worked with Tulsa Tech and CareerTech to design the model. It expands career options.

According to the district, the model will help “increase access to high-skill pathways.” It provides resources for students moving into jobs.

Students can pick tracks in health and emergency services. Automotive and transportation courses will also be available. Other tracks include technology and infrastructure, plus personal professional services.

The site at Central High School will give more TPS students access to career programs. The district noted this step will help cut down on Tulsa Tech waitlists.

“Tulsa Public Schools is committed to equipping students with the tools and skills necessary for success beyond high school. The addition of polytechnic high school will offer young people an opportunity to receive career and technical training that improves access to high-demand, high-skill, and high-wage jobs.”

Polytechnic programs combine standard high school classes with focused technical education tracks. Career technology centers work with local public school systems across Oklahoma. They provide specific trade instruction.

The new courses in Tulsa will expand postsecondary options for enrolled students. Programs will operate directly on the existing high school campus.
