Oklahoma City invests $15 million in Riversport whitewater facility

The Piedmont City Council voted 3-2 to table a zoning decision on the Project Open Sky data-center campus until Oct. 26 amid resident frustration.

The Piedmont City Council tabled a decision on the Project Open Sky data-center campus in a 3-2 vote. The delay frustrates local residents who attended the meeting.

The zoning proposal is expected back before the council on Oct. 26. Piedmont residents voiced frustration over the repeated delays on the proposed campus.

Oklahoma City is putting $15 million into the Riversport whitewater facility. The investment prepares the site for the 2028 Olympics. Construction is expected to start later this year.

The project includes several key additions to the whitewater venue:

  • A new event pavilion
  • Improved lighting
  • Updated signage
  • Broadcast capabilities
  • Competition timing technology

A new whole blood program is also starting in Edmond. Paramedics will use the blood to treat severe bleeding in the field. Officials say Edmond will be among a small percentage of ground EMS agencies nationwide with this tool.

City councils review local zoning requests to manage community land use and building developments. Emergency medical services provide urgent pre-hospital treatment and stabilization. Whitewater facilities host aquatic athletic events and public recreation.

The Piedmont council will take up the zoning matter again next month.
