Michael Gray placed on leave in Tahlequah excessive force investigation
Tahlequah Police Officer Michael Gray was placed on administrative leave as an internal review board investigates allegations of excessive force.
Tahlequah Police Officer Michael Gray faces an internal investigation over his actions during a recent arrest. The department placed him on administrative leave while an internal board reviews the incident.
The arrest happened Sept. 24 near East Downing Street and the Bertha Parker Bypass in Tahlequah. Gray served as the arresting officer in the incident.
Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King reviewed the arrest report on Sept. 28. King also reviewed body-worn camera footage from the arrest. He found sufficient cause to open an internal investigation.
Gray was placed on leave effective Sept. 29. Police said the action is administrative in nature. They said it should not be seen as a misconduct finding.
The Use of Force Review Board has convened to conduct the inquiry. Tahlequah Police Assistant Chief Steve Arnall will lead the board.
The review panel also includes the following members:
- Lieutenant Josh Girdner
- Lieutenant Matt Frits
- Detective Jason Girdner
- An unidentified representative selected by Gray
Internal review boards examine officer actions to ensure compliance with department policy. These panels assess body camera video, written reports and witness statements. Investigators then submit their findings for administrative review.
The Tahlequah Police Department said it is committed to an impartial review of the facts. Officials will release no further details at this time.
