Public voting opens for annual Oklahoma snowplow naming contest online
Voting is open for the annual Oklahoma snowplow naming contest, allowing residents to choose names for 35 state highway clearing vehicles online.
Oklahoma residents can now cast ballots online to name dozens of highway clearing vehicles across the state. The chosen titles will appear on public storm tracking maps during severe winter weather this season.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority launched their second Snowplow Naming Contest. Voting is open now.
Students across the state submitted name ideas for 24 ODOT vehicles. They also submitted ideas for 11 OTA vehicles for the first time this year.
Staff members from both agencies chose the top entries from all submissions. Residents can select their county online to view local entries and pick favorites.
“This contest is a creative way for students to not only have their name proudly displayed on our snowplows across the state but also connect with public safety in their community and honor the important work of our crews during storm season and beyond,” said Lisa Salim, OTA Chief of Public Relations. “We are also excited to join in the contest this year and see the creative names students submit for our fleet.”
Officials will reveal the winning names on Nov. 2. Winning students earn a winter weather prize pack and special site recognition.
Both state agencies maintain travel routes and operate heavy equipment during regional winter storms. Crews spread salt and push ice off roadways across Oklahoma to protect drivers.
The selected titles will remain visible on the public vehicle tracking site during future operations.
