Caleb Flynn convicted of murdering wife in Tipp City
A Miami County jury has reached a guilty verdict in the trial of Caleb Flynn, convicting him of murdering his wife at their Tipp City home.
A Miami County jury found Caleb Flynn guilty Tuesday of murdering his wife in their Tipp City home. The conviction on all counts follows a trial over the fatal February shooting.
Jurors needed just a few hours to reach the verdict. Flynn, 40, was a former pastor and contestant on “American Idol.”
Opening statements in the trial began on Friday, September 18. Closing arguments wrapped up on Tuesday.
Flynn claimed an intruder broke into the residence. He stated someone shot his wife, Ashley Smith Flynn, in the head during her sleep.
Investigators said Flynn staged the scene. They stated he wanted his wife dead to pursue an extramarital affair.
The defense argued prosecutors failed to prove the case. Defense attorneys said investigators collected no evidence linking Flynn to the homicide.
Sentencing is scheduled for 3 p.m. on October 5 in Miami County.
Defense attorney Patrick Mulligan said the defense team plans to challenge the outcome in court.
“As far as the jury verdict while we respect the system, certainly we’re disappointed. I fully anticipate that there will be a notice of appeal filed, and this decision will be tested thoroughly in the court of appeals,” Mulligan said.
Mulligan said the first six counts merge for sentencing purposes. Potential penalties under Ohio law for aggravated murder include prison terms of 20 to life, 25 to life, 30 to life or life without parole.
Mulligan did not call witnesses during the trial. He noted the state did not show the required legal elements.
Flynn did not testify on the stand. Mulligan stated Flynn had already provided three statements to police and maintains his innocence.
Prosecuting Attorney Paul Watkins addressed the media following the conviction.
“I’d like to start by thanking the jury for their dedication to justice in this case. To be quite honest, I’m tired of talking about Caleb Flynn,” Watkins said.
Watkins read a prepared statement from the victim’s family. The family expressed gratitude to the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office, the Tipp City Police Department, the FBI and BCI.
“Today’s verdict brings justice and accountability for Ashley’s death, and our family is deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring us to this moment. However, no verdict can bring Ashley back,” the family statement said.
The family asked for privacy to support the couple’s daughters. They asked the public to remember the victim for how she lived.
Under Ohio criminal procedure, merged offenses combine multiple related counts into a single conviction before a judge imposes a sentence. The trial court determines the final term during a formal sentencing hearing.
Flynn remains held in custody pending the sentencing hearing next week.
