DEA and Tulsa to host prescription drug take-back event on October 24

Tulsa and the DEA will host a prescription drug take back event on October 24, collecting unused medications at multiple drop-off sites across the metro area.

Federal and local officials in Tulsa will collect unneeded medications during a community disposal event on October 24. Proper disposal keeps leftover medicine out of homes and protects local water systems from contamination.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the City of Tulsa will gather unused prescriptions between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Officials explained that safely discarding medications prevents domestic hazards.

“Unused or expired medications left in the home can be misused or accidentally ingested, putting children, teens or others at serious risk. Additionally, flushing medications down the toilet contributes to water pollution. Wastewater treatment plants aren’t equipped to remove the chemicals found in many drugs, and trace amounts end up in our local streams, where long-term exposure can harm aquatic wildlife.”

Staff members will accept items at multiple locations across the Tulsa metropolitan region.

  • Elks Lodge Tulsa , 5335 South Harvard Avenue
  • Reasor’s (Sharps Site) , 7114 South Sheridan Road
  • Tulsa Crime Stoppers/Walmart Neighborhood Market , 4720 East 21st Street
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market , 3116 South Garnett Road
  • Walgreens , 1438 North Lewis Avenue
  • Walgreens Bixby , 15111 South Memorial Drive
  • Walmart Neighborhood Market , 1300 East Albany Street, Broken Arrow
  • Walgreens Jenks , 210 South Elm Street
  • Reasor’s Owasso , 11815 East 86th Street North
  • Sand Springs Police Department , 602 West Morrow Road
  • Walgreens Sapulpa , 11 West Taft Avenue

People with medical sharps, including needles and syringes, must drop them off at the Sheridan Road Reasor’s location. Other sites will not take those materials.

Federal drug agencies routinely organize national disposal dates. Municipal utilities manage treatment plants that process household wastewater before releasing it back into local waterways.

Residents in Tulsa can call the Center for Rural Health at 918-688-3813 with questions. People may also visit the City of Tulsa website for more details.
