Gunfire sensors were the first to report it: 17 shots near Central Avenue and 8th Street NW in downtown Albuquerque early on a Sunday morning. The teenager police arrested over that shooting will not be going home while he awaits trial.
Isaiah Martinez, 18, was ordered held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center by Second Judicial District Judge Emeterio Rudolfo, who heard prosecutors argue at a Bernalillo County detention hearing that Martinez remains a danger to the public.
Officers answering the ShotSpotter alert found an adult man with severe gunshot wounds, and emergency crews took him to a local trauma center in critical condition. Police say the shooting grew out of a street dispute.
Detectives say Martinez was with Matthew Akugue, also 18. After the argument, the pair walked to a vehicle, drove toward the victim near the roundabout at Central and 8th, and Martinez allegedly fired multiple rounds from the car at close range before fleeing. Both were located and arrested.
Indictments and trial preparations continue in the Second Judicial District Court, and Martinez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
